PCMark 8 Support
PCMark 8 FAQ
Is PCMark 8 compatible with Windows 10?
Yes, as long as the latest SystemInfo module is installed (4.39 or later). Steam version automatically includes this update. Standalone version requires you to separately install this update.
PCMark 8 crashes when I manually select an Intel CPU as the OpenCL device and try to run Video Chat v2.
This is a confirmed issue that has been seen at least on Core i5-4590 and Core i7-4770K processors, and can happen with other Intel CPU models as well. The cause appears to be a compatibility issue with OpenCV library. The issue is under investigation and we plan to fix this in an upcoming update to PCMark 8. It should be noted that the issue is fairly minor since the x86 code path in OpenCV commonly performs better than OpenCL running on the CPU, so the fix is not expected to influence benchmark scores for default PCMark 8 tests that feature Video Chat v2.
PCMark 8 Storage test score is lower than expected. I have a NVMe disk. Why?
Update: This issue has been resolved in Storage Test v2.0 that is present in PCMark 8 v2.6.512 and onwards. This version modifies the test so that it will behave the same across all NVMe and SATA devices, regardless of the driver.
Short answer: because NVMe drivers behave differently than SATA/AHCI drivers. PCMark 8 benchmarks all storage devices the same way and NVMe is not any different.
Long answer: New NVMe storage devices run on a completely new software stack. Traditional SATA drivers are not used and instead there's a new driver in Windows that can be either implemented by the device manufacturer or it can be the standard NVMe driver provided by Microsoft. What is different from old software stack, is that there's a command called FUA (force unit access) that is now implemented in Microsoft's driver so that all write operations are enforced to be written not only on a cache but on the non-volatile media. This is different from how AHCI was implemented and will lead to reduced performance. The benefit of the implementation with Microsoft NVMe driver is that it keeps your data safe in case of power outage or system crash.
The storage performance (and as a side result also PCMark 8 Storage score) may be improved by installing device drivers provided by the device manufacturer. For example, Intel provides drivers for Intel 750 SSD that improve the performance. Another option is to tweak storage device policies in Windows. Futuremark does not recommend modifying Windows cache policies on a production system since it can lead to data loss during a power failure or a system crash.
PCMark 8 never optimises or modifies the PC being benchmarked. Testing is done on the system as it is in order to reflect the real application performance an end user would observe when using the PC. Applications do not detect the storage device and change their behaviour according to device and neither should a benchmark do.
PCMark 8 storage test takes an excessively long time to run. I'm testing very large HDDs. Why?
Currently the generation of the sandbox is slower if the disk partition size is very large. A workaround would be to create a small partition for the test (100GB would be enough for OS, PCMark 8 and the sandbox) rather than using the entire very large drive. We are evaluating options how to improve this in the future.
I'm getting a result of 0 from the Photo Editing test and my system has NVIDIA GPU and Windows 10.
We've seen this issue in our Windows 10 testing and this appears to be an issue with the NVIDIA drivers for Windows 10 with specific GPU models (for example, GeForce GTX 960 and 980). NVIDIA has been notified, we have no workaround at this time.
I cannot find PCMark 8 Advanced Edition in the Futuremark Store. Why not?
Due to technical limitations with the store, PCMark 8 Advanced Edition is not available from Futuremark Store. It is available from Steam, a popular digital entertainment platform where you can buy and share games and software. Steam has 60 million users and is available in 237 countries and 21 different languages.
Keys bought from Steam can also be used with the stand-alone version by just adding the key to the Basic Edition. All you need to do is to install and launch PCMark 8 once from Steam so the key is stored on your PC - after that you can use the stand-alone installer and uploading just one PCMark 8 result to a 3DMark.com account will store the key there as well. The key can be viewed on the Help tab if you wish to copy it down for safekeeping.
Is PCMark 8 compatible with Windows 8.1?
Yes, as long as you are using the latest version of PCMark 8.
Is PCMark 8 compatible with Windows 7?
Yes. The Web tests require Internet Explorer 10 so please ensure that all Windows Updates are installed.
Is PCMark 8 compatible with the N-versions of Windows (Windows 7 N, Windows 8 N) sold in Europe?
Windows N editions do not include software to manage and play CDs, DVDs, and other digital media files. To use PCMark 8 with Windows N editions, you must first download and install Windows Media Player 12, which is available for free from the Microsoft website.
Tuning tab...haven't seen this before. What's it for?
Futuremark received a lot of feedback on PCMark 7 and one common request was for a way to run individual workloads separately so they could be experimented with when tweaking a system for absolute peak performance. This is now supported in PCMark 8 through the Tuning tab. Any workload(s) can be run and raw result data from the workload(s) is displayed in Tuning results log. No PCMark score is calculated but raw test data can be used to track exact effect of any system tweaks between runs.
I tried to update and the installation failed halfway through or the updated complete but PCMark 8 now refuses to start.
If this occurs, please manually uninstall Futuremark SystemInfo and PCMark 8, then re-run PCMark 8 installer. This will correct the issue.
The 'Accelerated' mode on my Intel Celeron N2920 seems to be incorrect?
There is a known problem with the Intel Celeron N2920 processor and the LibreOffice test, which we are hoping to resolve soon with a patch. Until then, the Accelerated mode for this CPU is not supported and the scores it produces are invalid. Conventional mode is unaffected and can be used as normal.
When I try to run the Application Tests, selections are greyed out and I cannot run the test.
Application Tests are available in Advanced Edition and Professional Edition. Application Tests require that you have a compatible version of Microsoft Office(R) and/or Adobe Creative Suite(R) installed on your PC.
Officially supported versions are Microsoft Office 2010 or later and Adobe Creative Suite 6 or Creative Cloud. Older versions or Trial editions of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint may work but are not officially supported. If have some but not all the applicable applications installed, you will be able to run individual application tests but overall Office and Creative Suite test scores require all the applicable applications.
Note that you should compare Application Test scores between different hardware configurations only when using the exact same version of the applications when testing.
Microsoft Office(R) Word(TM) test gets stuck with a file saving dialog. I'm using an Acer system. How to fix this?
We've received reports that some Acer systems ship with "AcerCloudWord" Word add-in which is incompatible with PCMark 8 Application Tests. Please disable or remove this Word add-in to fix this issue.
Adobe Application Tests fail to complete. I'm using non-English language edition of Adobe Creative Cloud.
Only English versions of Adobe Creative Suite are supported. Change the language of the applications to English.
When I try to run Adobe After Effects test, the test fails to run. Why? I'm using the latest Creative Cloud version.
Update PCMark 8 to the latest version to fix this issue.
I'm getting an "Init Error" with Video Chat or Group Video Chat. How do I fix this?
Ensure that your video and sound drivers are up to date and ensure that your system is capable of playing audio - including having an audio output device (speakers or headphones) plugged in. While the video clips do not feature any audio, the video playback code requires that the system is capable of playing it.
I have enough free disk space but the storage test fails at the start of a storage trace playback. Help?
Storage test seeks for large enough contiguous disk area for the sandbox and if you have a very fragmented disk without enough free space in one block, this may occur. Please defragment the disk and try again.
