OCZ Unveils Do-It-Yourself Gaming Notebook

Wed 2008-05-14 - Posted by Patrick "MACMAC" MacMillan
OCZ has just announced a Do-It-Yourself Gaming Notebook solution and initiative. Has this peaked your curiosity? Well then keep reading!

Here’s what they had to say:

“Sunnyvale, Calif.—May 14, 2008—OCZ Technology Group, Inc., a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory, today unveiled their pioneering Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Gaming Notebook Program. Under this program, users ranging from hardware enthusiasts to mainstream gamers can partake in configuring and building their own gaming-grade mobile solution. The OCZ DIY program enables users to purchase an unconfigured notebook and ultimately customize the system to their needs with the help of guides and direct support.”

The DIY Gaming Notebook allows you to choose and install your own Intel processor, DDR2 memory, SATA hard drive, and OS. This is a step in the right direction, but I would have liked to see a customizable GPU as well. They could have used a Mobile PCI Express Module (MXM) for the GPU, and partnered up with companies like ASUS, which uses MXM’s for its EAH3850 Trinity graphics card, to allow a wide range of GeForce and Radeon GPU possibilities. Hopefully, this will become a reality in the next revision. In the mean time, it will be interesting to see how much this product retails for, and whether it really is cheaper to D-I-Y than buy from large PC manufacturers.
